10th Annual Neuse River Cleanup Results
On April 7, 2012 more than 350 volunteers came out to pick, drag and paddle junk away from our vital waterways.

Together, we collected 13,821 lbs of trash, including 3,440 lbs of recycle and 53 tires!

We found some weird stuff too:

  • A handgun (properly turned over to the police)
  • An intact deer skull, including antlers
  • A swimsuit
  • A used toilet
  • A loveseat
  • The "Captian's" seat from a car
  • ...and an Easter Bunny!

10th Anniversary T-Shirt Design Competition
In honor of the 10th anniversary of the Annual Neuse River Cleanup we asked the community to help design the event t-shirt...and four of the submissions were so good we couldn't pick just one.  This year's event shirt is a collaborative work by four local, talented artists and we can't thank Mia and Mya Velazco of Raleigh and Jessica Wall of Kenley enough for their wonderful designs!

This 100% cotton shirt is locally-produced
...and locally designed!
Supplies of this special, Anniversary Cleanup T-shirt are limited and they won't be reproduced so order yours today!

Purchase in advance and you can pick up at your chosen site the day of the cleanup or at the NRF office the following week.  Please call the Raleigh office at (919) 856-1180 for questions or to order offline.

New in 2012: Youth & Team Sponsorship Competitions!

For 10 years, the NRF has been the go-to organization for river cleanups in North Carolina.  We have conducted cleanups all down the Neuse River and are starting new cleanup events every year. Over the past 10 years these cleanup events have collected nearly 136,000 pounds of trash. Each year we make sure that more than 300 people get to the right place, have the right supplies, and have a good, safe time serving our community on this one special day…but that takes a lot of time and resources.

We want to make sure the cleanup can continue to be a day of accomplishment, beauty, and community spirit by finding a way to bring at least a fraction of resources we put into the cleanup back to the NRF to support our future work – that’s where you come in!

By participating in our new Neuse River Cleanup sponsorship program you will help us make sure that the Neuse RIVERKEEPER® Foundation continues to have the resources that it needs to protect the Neuse River Basin for drinking and recreation through programs like the Annual Neuse River Cleanup.

Check it out - there's a program for everyone - and you don't want to miss out on the great prizes and thank you gifts we have lined up!

Thanks, in advance, for taking your commitment to the Annual Neuse River Cleanup one step further this year.

Recycling is now an important piece of the Neuse River Cleanup.
In past years, everything collected from the banks and bed of the Neuse has been carted away by trash trucks; this year we've decided to take the positive impact of the cleanup a step further. Cleanup site locations will have washing stations and separate colored bags available for recycling in order to reduce the amount of trash going to our landfills and save the County money and space. This can make a huge difference. During our trial run in October we diverted almost 40% of what we collected to a recycling facility - that's over 2,000 lbs of mostly bottles and cans!

Also, we are hoping to reduce the amount of plastic bottles we recycle by asking volunteers to bring their own water bottle. It can be an aluminum, plastic, or even a soda bottle that you are re-using. We will have water available to refill your bottle. Please bring your own water bottle and help us reduce our waste!
